Give your patients the tools to make their own decisions
Choosing permanent birth control is a significant decision. Proper patient selection, screening, and counseling will improve your success with the Essure procedure. Encourage your patients to reflect, learn about the procedure, and discuss it with those closest to them before committing to permanent birth control.
Essure may be right for patients who:
- Are certain they do not want any more children
- Want to stop worrying about unplanned pregnancy
- Want to stop managing temporary birth control
- Dislike taking hormones
- Want to avoid incision, scarring, or risks of other birth control procedures
- Are concerned about general anesthesia
- Want more spontaneity in their sexual relationship
For these patients, highlight Essure’s high patient comfort and satisfaction, rapid recovery, safety, and effectiveness.
The best way to counsel patients regarding permanent birth control is to give them the tools to make their own decisions.
Make sure your patients know
- The procedure should be considered irreversible. Removal of the micro-inserts requires surgery.
- Patient must use an alternate form of birth control for 3 months post-procedure, until the Essure Confirmation Test verifies occlusion.
- Reword. While no method is 100% effective
- Successful placement of both micro-inserts may not be possible in all women
- Some conditions such as pain or bleeding may be associated with the procedure. Be sure to cover all risks listed in the Patient Information Booklet.
The procedure should not be performed if:
- Only one micro-insert can be placed, due to unicornate uterus, previous salpingectomy, or PTO
- Patient had a previous tubal ligation
- Patient has a confirmed allergy to contrast media or nickel
- Patient is unsure about her desire to bear children in the future
